10. National Variants of the EL (excluding AE)

E owes the richness of its vocabulary to a nubmber of its national variants which appeared as a result of colonial expantion pf Britain all over the world. Now besides GB intesl, the EL is spoken in some countries and provincies. In Scotland which officially makes part of GB, there are 2 official literary languages: E and Scotish. In the 14th c. when the process of formation of the NEL began, Scotland had political autonomy and was ruled by its own Kings and Queens. It retained the autonomy till the beginning of the 18th c. Scotish was notin inballed into the process of the formation of the NEL, but had its own way of linguistics development => many peculiarities. (boat – bo:t). Then Scotish retained some OE words which disappeared from BE. In general, in comparison to ModE, Scotish words look and sound more archaic. The existance and survival of these forms was supported by the poetry of Robert Burns. Among modern linguists there is a debate about the status of the Modern Scotish Language. Some of them – Illyish – are inlined to treat it as an independent Germanic Language. Others think it to be the Nothern Dialect of E – Ivanova. The Scots themselves certainly believe they have their own language.

In Ireland there are also two literary languages – E and Irish, based on the Gaelic form of Celtic Languages. The majority of people speak both languages, they are bilingual.
